Standing Firm in Christ

 Judges 11-12; Psalms 50; 2 Corinthians 1

“’Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come…it is by faith you stand firm.’”

2 Corinthians 1:21, 22, 24

Paul’s testimony was that the anointing of the Holy Spirit in his life was the key to his capacity and the capacity of the Corinthian Church to stand firm in Christ. The Holy Spirit was God’s seal of ownership on the lives of Christ-followers, testifying to the world and the powers of darkness that they, and we, belong to him. Not only that, but the Holy Spirit is God’s deposit within us, guaranteeing our future inheritance as heaven-bound, Kingdom citizens. It is the Holy Spirit who empowers our faith so we have the capacity to stand firm, unmovable in our complete dependency on Christ. Paul was confident that the Holy Spirit was a better ‘disciple-r’ of the young Corinthian Church than he himself would be if he were able to be present with them.

Today, let us invite the Holy Spirit to establish and strengthen us so that we can stand firm in our faith, regardless of our challenges and tests.

“Lord Jesus, you are my life. I stand firm in you through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
