Like Little Children
Chronicles 14-15; Psalms. 132; Matthew 18
“…‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: ‘I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 18:1-3
Change is never easy. When we think of who we’d like to become, we rarely think of a child. Jesus confronted the pride and status-seeking nature of his disciples by using a child as the model of what he requires in us to enter his kingdom. Jesus requires humility, teach-ability and faith to enter his kingdom. Most never make it. We think it takes a prayer after giving mental assent to a few theological truths, and then our sins are forgiven. Jesus invites us to change.
Who wants to change?
Who wants to become more childlike?
Who wants less status and more dependency in their lives?
Who wants less certainty, more trust and more faith?
Unless we change and become like little children, we won’t ever enter Christ’s kingdom.
“Lord Jesus, I humble myself before you. You are my leader and I submit myself to you and your ways. May your kingdom come and your will be done in my life.”
