A Mission to the Margins

Zechariah 10-12; Psalms 126; Luke 14

“…Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’…’Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.’”

Luke 14:21, 23

We often see gospel-receptivity at the margins of society. At the margins, life is difficult and most are aware of their need for salvation of one kind or another. Jesus’ story was told from the perspective of the owner of a great house who wanted his banquet hall to be full. The urgency of mission with which his servants were sent out was not matched by the casual replies and excuses of other land owners. Finally, it was the vulnerable, homeless, and helpless who responded to the situation.

Are we valuing each life as God values them?

Are we valuing God’s mission of filling his banquet hall as much as he is?

Are we the distracted landowners, commissioned servants, or vulnerable poor in this story?

“Lord, teach me to value what and who you hold dear, for your glory.”
