Take This Cup

Job 25: Mark 13-14

“’Abba, Father,’ he said, ‘everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.’”

Mark 14:36

The cup of suffering Jesus drank for us enables us to drink the cup of the covenant through his blood. The only way we drink this cup is by also praying, ‘not what I will, but what you will’ (Mark 14:36).

This is not a one-way covenant. For a covenant to be enforced, both parties must agree. The intimate title of “Abba” with which Jesus prays to the Father is now our privilege to use through this covenant. Yet just as Abba Father asked his Son to drink the cup of suffering, we, too, can be asked to endure suffering for his greater glory and purposes.

Can the Father entrust costly assignments to us for his mission and glory?

Will we choose to surrender our will to that of the Father?

“Abba, Father, your will be done in my life and family, for your glory.”
