Welcome a Little Child
Psalms 121; Mark 9-10
“…’What were you arguing about on the road?’ But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest…He took a little child and had him stand among them…‘Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.’”
Mark 9:33, 34, 36, 37
Thoughts of power and status are rooted in pride and inevitably lead to conflict. Jesus used a child to point his disciples in a different direction. To welcome a child, who has no status and nothing to give us to increase our status, requires humility. It is humility that welcomes the presence of Jesus and our Father.
Will we patiently listen to those who have no status?
Will we open our arms to the ‘least of these’?
When leaders lead this way, they are serving others rather than using people to advance themselves. This lesson in humility by Jesus transformed his disciples and it can transform us today.
How will we respond differently to the children and ‘least of these’ around us today?
“Father, love through me today, for your glory.”
