Turn My Heart
Ephesians 5-6; Psalms 119:1-80
“Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things;…”
Psalm 119:36, 37
“For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person – such a man is an idolater – has any inheritance in the kingdom of God…Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
Ephesians 5:5; 6:11
Right now, we are in a full-on battle for our heart.
Which direction are our hearts and eyes pointing?
What we fix our eyes and our hearts on controls our hearts. Selfish gain, worthless things, sexual images, and shiny toys are not just distractions. If we set our hearts on them we lose our inheritance in the kingdom of God. Temptation is the impulse to glance, to look, and to meditate on. Setting our hearts direction involves volitional choices to pursue immorality and greed, so that we are defined by those pursuits. The devil’s schemes are to destroy us. David’s prayer to God was that his heart be turned to God’s Word and his eyes turned to the Lord. We, too, are offered the power of the Holy Spirit to take our stand every day against temptation. The armor of God is Jesus.
Will we surrender to Christ today and engage in the battle?
“Lord Jesus, I turn my heart and eyes to you this day; I pray for the power to stand against temptation, for your glory.”
