The Church on Mission

Exodus 30-32; Acts 8

“Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison. Those who had been scattered preached the Word wherever they went.”

Acts 8:3, 4

What can we learn about the definition of the word “church” from this text?

Saul’s attempt to destroy the church did not involve burning buildings or structures. The church was men and women who worshiped in homes. The church was and is people, rather than buildings, services, programs, and budgets. When persecution scattered these people, they preached the word wherever they went. Everyone was commissioned with the capacity to share the gospel, not just those who had formal theological training. Our mission field today is wherever we are. When we live on mission with Jesus, filled with his Spirit, every day in every place becomes an opportunity to share the Word of God. This is a church that cannot be stopped by the gates of hell. God redeemed the wrath of the enemy and used it to disperse his church throughout the region and eventually the whole world. When we get too comfortable, we lose focus on our mission. We either choose to live on mission, or God propels us into mission. The church is meant for mission.

Will we live in his call this day?

“Lord Jesus, you are my leader, your Word is alive, and your mission is my mission, for your glory.”
