Finishing Well

 Isaiah 6,7; 2 Chronicles 26,27; Philemon

“…His fame spread far and wide, for he was greatly helped until he became powerful. But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God…”

2 Chronicles 26:15, 16

“…although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do, yet I appeal to you on the basis of love…”

Philemon 8, 9

Fame and power often present a more challenging test of faith than persecution and poverty. King Uzziah honored God, sought God, and was clearly blessed by God. Yet, he was not content to delegate the priestly duties, but chose to offer incense and sacrifice inside the temple himself, violating God’s command concerning the Levitical priesthood. In contrast, Paul, imprisoned at the end of his life, was dependent on letters to communicate his thoughts and intentions. Paul could have used his spiritual authority to order Philemon to accept his returning runaway slave, Onesimus; instead, he appealed to Philemon in love and humility. Paul was finishing his leadership journey well. Authority combined with humility and love is beautiful.

“Lord Jesus, I humble myself before you and pray for more love to serve others well, for your glory.”
