A Better Name

 2 Kings 15,16; Hosea 1; 1 Hebrews 1

“After she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, Gomer had another son. Then the Lord said, ‘Call him Lo-Ammi, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.’”

Hosea 1:8, 9

So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father’?”

Hebrews 1:4, 5

Names have a lot of significance in God’s kingdom. Names can represent our potential, our character, and our relationship. Hosea’s children were a prophetic picture of God’s rejection of Israel’s idolatry and adultery. In contrast, the writer of Hebrews used the name given to Jesus Christ as Son of God to distinguish him from the angels. Those who respond to God’s invitation to a covenant relationship through Jesus Christ are given the name “son” or “daughter” in God’s family. We then carry new names full of prophetic significance. When we understand our name in the kingdom of God, we will reject the name the world tries to give us and we will not try to make a name for ourselves.

Do we know our name?

“Lord Jesus, thank you for naming me and giving me standing and place in your family and kingdom, for your glory.”
