The Call of God
Genesis 12-14; Luke 5
“The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you;’…Abram traveled through the land…The Lord appeared to Abram and said, ‘To your offspring I will give this land.’ So he built an altar there to the Lord…”
Genesis 12:1, 2, 6, 7
The call of God is not just for cross-cultural missionaries who travel long distances and leave all behind. Abram’s call is the same call Jesus gave the disciples who were fishing at Galilee. It is the call to find our life in Christ, rather than in our profession, vocation, family, church, community, or any other secondary identity.
Will we place our lives fully in the hands of God, and seek first his kingdom and his righteousness?
Stepping out in response to that call required Abram’s radical dependence on the Lord in all things. Abram built prayer altars wherever he went as he called on the Lord, and so will we. Prayer altars are built from the hard things in our lives and the sacrifice of our lives to the Lord, again and again.
Have we stepped out to join Christ in his mission and are we building prayer altars as we seek God?
“Lord God, I will follow you and seek you, for your glory.”
