Speech that Builds
Ecclesiastes 7-9; Ephesians 4
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
Ephesians 4:29, 30
In western culture where communication through social media has elevated self-expression, Paul’s counsel was to instead focus on the needs of others and to build them up. In the face of unbridled and increasingly vulgar language in our culture, Paul said, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths”. Self-control in speech is only possible when our hearts are continually surrendered to the Holy Spirit. From the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. The indwelling Spirit of God will deliver us from unforgiveness, bitterness, envy, pride, and all the other sin-strongholds which produce unwholesome talk. Resisting the checks and cautions of the Holy Spirit grieves God and undermines his sanctifying work in our lives.
Is our speech focused on self, or on others?
Is our speech up-building or discouraging for others?
“Lord Jesus, guide my words, for your glory.
