Defiled by Sin
1 Chronicles 16; Psalms 106; Matthew 19
“But they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs. They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them. They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons. They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood. They defiled themselves by what they did; by their deeds they prostituted themselves.”
Psalm 106:35-39
How we engage culture, and in particular the idols of our surrounding culture, influences both our spiritual health and our capacity to transform the culture around us. This brief spiritual history of Israel chronicles the devastating impact of worshiping demonic idols and even engaging in human sacrifice. Not only were Israel’s children destroyed, and families defiled, but the land itself was desecrated by the shedding of innocent blood. Those God had blessed to be a blessing, came under the curse of sin. Instead of transforming the cultures of the nations around them, Israel herself was spiritually prostituted. This is the story of many nations that have experienced revival and spiritual blessing in previous generations.
Are we confronting and opposing the defiling idols of our culture, or are we being destroyed by them?
“Lord Jesus, deliver me and my family from evil, for your glory.”
